Number of players:
2 to 4 – singles (2) or partners (4)
Object of game:
Points are made by tossing washers into box or cup (center piece).1 point for getting it in the box, 3 points for getting it in the cup (PVC, Square, can etc.). First person or team to score 21 wins.
Optional – Some games are played first person or team to score 21without going over wins.
Preparations:
- Set boxes on even ground.
- Make sure rope between boxes is tight.
Game play summary:
Players always shoot towards the same box. Team or player (player 1)that got points last goes first, throwing all 3 washers. Points are added up for all washers made. Player 2 then throws all 3 washers. If both players get a washer in the middle or in the box, they cancel each other out like in regular horseshoes.
Example:
If player 1 throws 3 washers and gets 2 in the cup and 1 in the box, they would have 7 points. If player 2 then throws 3 washers and gets 1 in the cup and 2 in the box, they would have 5 points. These cancel each other out and player 1 gets 2 points (7-5=2). Player or team who got points last goes first. Players move to the opposite box for each round unless in team play. Play continues until a total of 21 points is reached by one player or team.
Optional:
Team or player cannot go over 21. If player or team goes over 21 points, then that player or team must subtract the points made on that round from their score.
Example:
The score is player 1 has 18 points and player 2 has 15. Player 1 must get 3 points and no more in that round. If player 1 gets one in the cup and one in the box, then they have 4 points for a total of 22. If player 2 throws one in the box but misses the other two, then their total is one point. The net effect is 3 (4-1=3) and player one wins. But if player 2 misses all three, then player 1 must subtract a point from their score.
Misc:
- When pitching washers, toe or foot must be behind front of box.
- Some variations allow 2 points for landing a washer on the box.
